Obaku Ingen/Lingyin Lecture Series: 'Manpukuji – Views from Inside the Main Temple of the Obaku School of Zen'

When: January 30, 2023 4:00pm to 5:30pm

Please join the Center for Buddhist Studies for the Obaku Ingen/Lingyin Lecture Series.

Our first lecture, "Manpukuji – Views from Inside the Main Temple of the Obaku School of Zen," will be presented by John Johnston, senior fellow at the University of Arizona's Center for Buddhist Studies. This lecture is based on the nearly two months that Johnston recently spent as a guest monk at Manpukuji, the main temple of the Obaku school of Zen located in Kyoto, Japan. The unique characteristics and practices of the Obaku school will be discussed with emphasis on monastic culture that is typically “behind the scenes”. Dr. Johnston will also introduce masterpieces of Buddhist sculpture at Manpukuji. His research at Manpukuji was supported by grants from the Japan Foundation and Ishibashi Foundation.

This will be a hybrid event, meaning you can participate in-person or via Zoom. To receive a link to the webinar, please sign up for our email list using the link below. If you are already on our list of "Lectures and Academic Research," you will receive the link soon.
