Charlas Con Cafe (In Person): 'Communal data governance: digital access and protection in indigenous territories of Oaxaca, Mexico'
With expanding internet coverage, the issues of access to information in native languages and data protection have become increasingly important in indigenous communities in Mexico, long subject to discrimination and extractivist economic practices. This talk examines the issue of communal data governance in Oaxaca, exploring how indigenous rights and traditions of self governance might be extended into the realm of Information and Communication Technologies.
Oliver Froehling is a geographer, originally from Germany. He has been living and working in Oaxaca, Mexico, since 1996, doing research on indigenous autonomy and civil society in Mexico while founding and working with a number of NGOs. He is currently the director of SURCO-Servicios Universitarios y Redes de Conocimientos en Oaxaca AC and holds an affiliation with the University of Arizona, University of Kentucky, and University of Vermont.
