AAPI Empowerment Project

When: April 08, 2022 12:00pm to 2:00pm

The Marketing 425 class is working to mitigate violence through the empowerment of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities by hosting an empowerment project event.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a perceived increase in racism towards Asians and Asian-Americans. These attitudes were molded out of ignorance with individuals correlating the disease's origins in Wuhan, China to people of East Asian and Southeast Asian descent or appearance. This has led to instances of prejudice, discrimination, xenophobia and target violence. In Arizona, the state has witnessed a sharp increase in hate crimes over the past two years. Hate crimes motivated by race, ethnicity, and ancestry made up the majority of hate crimes in the state in 2020 and 2021. After the killing of Vicha Ratanapakdee in January 2021 and the March 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, the Phoenix suburbs of Chandler and Mesa saw demonstrations aimed at taking a stance against anti-Asian violence. It is of paramount importance to continue spreading this sentiment to protect our local Tucson community from anti-Asian violence which has not shown any recent sign of slowing down.

We are hosting this event to spread awareness for the AAPI community. Everyone on campus is welcome to join. We will be giving away pizza, beverages, T-shirts, and prizes to everyone who attends the event. So come stop by the mall this Friday!
