15th Annual Social Justice Symposium – 'Fighting Health Inequities through Racial Justice: A Public Health Lens' (Virtual)

This year’s symposium will be held virtually via a Zoom webinar on: Friday, March 19, 2021 from 8 a.m.-2:30 p.m. A pre-event film screening will be held the night before the event on March 18. The annual Social Justice Symposium facilitates dialogue surrounding the interrelationship of social issues and health between students, faculty, community partners and other health professionals. 

The theme of this year’s Symposium is "Fighting Health Inequities through Racial Justice: A Public Health Lens," which will use public health to explore health inequities as a result of racism/racial injustice across an array of topics such as maternal and child health, mental health, COVID-19 outcomes and prevention, nutritional disparities and chronic disease prevention.

Keynote Speaker: Charmaine Ruddock from the National REACH Coalition

Charmaine Ruddock, serves as project director of the Bronx Health REACH/NY CEED, The Institute for Family Health. Ruddock joined the Institute for Family Health in 2000 to direct Bronx Health REACH, a coalition of 70 community and faith-based organizations, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to address racial and ethnic health disparities. As project director for Bronx Health REACH, Ruddock's key responsibilities include developing a community coalition; linking health care providers, community leaders, community based organizations, social service agencies, government entities and local small businesses to a joint community approach; and addressing socio-medical determinants of health disparity.

The National REACH Coalition is a national network of community-based organizations that promotes, develops, and implements innovative health equity programs in both urban and rural communities. Our staff and board of directors are leaders in the public health field, with years of experience focused on the elimination of racial and ethnic health disparities within the United States.
