Sept. 18: "Global Latin America: International Migration, Transnationalism and Mediated Diasporas in Europe, North America and Asia" – With Jessica Retis, associate professor of journalism at the University of Arizona and director of the Master's in Bilingual Journalism program. This talk will examine the increasingly mediated diasporic spaces of Latin Americans and Latinxs in Europe, North America and, more recently, in Asia. The speaker will discuss Latinxs representations in the media, the development of Latino media in global cities and the transnational nature of their communication and information practices. In this context, the speaker questions the tendency to homogenize communities as diverse as Latin Americans and Latinxs. Why do public discourses tend to stigmatize their presence, relating them mainly with social conflicts? What role do Latin American and Latino media play in these transnational contexts?
