LaTeS: Language Teacher Symposium – 'The Art of Integrated, Literacy-Based Lesson Planning' (INFO)

When: November 07, 2020 9:00am

This talk will be presented by Cherice Montgomery, assistant professor of Spanish and Portuguese at Brigham Young University.

Teaching students to how to communicate in the interpretive, interpersonal and presentational modes can be a challenge. This workshop offers a step-by-step process for designing multidimensional, literacy-based lessons that skillfully transform textbook materials into artfully integrated masterpieces of language, content and culture.

Workshop participants will learn to:

  • Engage learners with the academic content embedded in culturally authentic texts.
  • Employ interactive simulations and other content-based activities to develop learners' critical thinking and discussion skills.
  • Expand the complexity of students' language by counterbalancing attention to language and content in informational texts.
  • Encourage students' success with practical strategies for scaffolding language production.

Participants are encouraged to bring several culturally authentic texts for the classes they teach, along with a laptop, tablet or iPad. A certificate for six hours of Arizona Continuing Education will be provided to attendees.

LaTeS is free to attend (including lunch), but registration will be required. Registration opens in the fall.

University of Arizona faculty and students who are interested in hearing Cherice Montgomery may be better suited to attend a presentation that she will be giving in the SLAT colloquium series on Nov. 7 titled, "Crafting Compelling Experiences: The Power of Design-based Pedagogies and 21st Century Skills in Immersive Language Learning Contexts."
