The Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC) recognized the Schaefers with the Arts Patron Award during its June 7 awards ceremony.

The Lumies, which have been awarded for the last 12 years, honors those individuals, groups, organizations and businesses contributing to the region's creative vitality.

The Schaefers have dedicated 50 years to the cultivation and support of the arts in Tucson, volunteering on several boards and making significant financial contributions to art-based and cultural organizations and endeavors.

Both were deeply involved in the development of two world-renowned arts centers: the Center for Creative Photography, which is located in the John P. Schaefer Building, and the UA Poetry Center, housed in the Helen S. Schaefer Building.

A TPAC release noted: "Their extraordinary service to the arts and their generous, sustained gifts to Tucson’s many arts organizations are worthy of recognition."
