UA Humanities Week to Hit Tucson

What kind of social texture do we hear in voices like Dada and Nicki Minaj or those voices that appear unusual or incomprehensible to what some perceive to be proper communication and aesthetics?

Another good question, especially with the election year under way: Do individual perceptions have a place in politics?

These questions, and others related to important contemporary issues, will be answered during the UA's Humanities Week.

Life-long learners can indulge in a week of lectures, panel discussions and theatrics during Humanities Week, which runs Oct. 15-19 and is sponsored by the UA College of Humanities. Events will be held in the Poetry Center's Dorothy Rubel Room at the Helen S. Schaefer Building, 1508 E. Helen St.

The kick-off event, "How Personality Plays into Our Political Thinking," will be held Oct. 15 at 5 p.m. with a panel of faculty members. The speakers will be Tom Miller, the UA's associate provost for faculty affairs and an English professor; Kate Kenski, an associate professor of communication; and Kevin Coe, an assistant professor of communication. Light refreshments will be served from 4-4:45 p.m.

Highlights of the week of events include:

  • An analysis of popular memes, including the "Honey Badger," "Gangham Style," "No Impact Man" and others
  • An evening of Russian music and poetry, along with a consume context
  • A discussion about the new field of digital humanities
  • A presentation on the annual department of Spanish and Portuguese film festival

All Humanities Week events are free and open to the public. To view the full week of events, visit the UA College of Humanities events page.
