UA alumni have opened two new Tucson area farmers’ markets near communities that currently have limited access to local foods.

Called "FoodInRoot," the local startup was founded by two 2011 UA McGuire Entrepreneurship Program graduates and is "dedicated to promoting local food by providing opportunities for small growers and craft food producers to connect with customers and utilizing modern technology to better manage and leverage the growth of farmers’ markets," according to a release.

Co-founders Clayton Kammerer and Jon Hall, who is also a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale, note that FoodInRoot is working to support changes around the local food movement.

"You should always have the opportunity to shake the hand of the person who grows your food. At a farmers’ market, you have the option to do that," Kammerer said in a prepared statement.

The markets, both of which opened this month, are:

The Santa Fe Square Market, located at 7000 E. Tanque Verde Road adjacent to Udall Park, will be open Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. On the second Sunday of each month through April, the market will include a fine arts festival.

The El Con Center Market, at 3601 E. Broadway Blvd. on the north side of East Broadway Boulevard, will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
