Special Collections Maintains Rare, Unique Items

La Monica Everett-Haynes

At the UA's Special Collections, the call number of  QB41.G17 1610 is dedicated to the first edition issue of the "Sidereus Nuncius Magna," which was authored by Galileo Galilei and dated 1610.

The book was published by Thomam Baglionum Venetiis and describes the invention of the telescope as well as observations of constellations and other celestial bodies that Galileo both observed and found. Also, the book contains hand-written corrections made by Galileo and is housed in a vault at the Special Collections at the UA Libraries.

This is just one example of the notable works housed in the Special Collections archives, which includes important, unique and rare books and archival materials on Arizona, the southwestern region of the U.S., U.S./Mexico borderlands and other topics.
