The UA Hispanic Alumni Club (UAHA) this month honored Tucson City Manager Richard Miranda as a Portrait of Excellence winner during a July 24 event.

"He is an alumnus and is commited to the community, and what better way to honor someone who is committed to the same mission as the organization," said Marc Acuña, assistant director of Multicultural Clubs and the UA Alumni Association Scholarship Program.

"And he's a Tucson native. It can't get any better than that," Acuña also said.

Miranda will be honored again during the Portrait of Excellence Scholarship Dinner, which will be held Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at the JW Marriott Starr Pass Resort & Spa, 3800 W. Star Pass Blvd., in Tucson, Ariz. Tickets are available online.

Prior to serving as the city manager, Miranda served as the Tucson chief of police, having joined the department in 1975. As the city manager, Miranda is responsible for the management of various city departments, including the offices of Community Services, Environmental Services, Housing and Community Development, Parks & Recreation, among others.

Also during the July event, UAHA members honored donor Francesca Felix while celebrating a legacy of giving.

Over a period spanning three decades, UAHA has raised $3 million in support of more than 2,500 UA students.

"The club is committed to that mission of help students and making sure student succeed," Acuña said.
