Graduate Student Resources Abound

While the UA does invest in a broad range of programs and resources meant to support undergraduate students, that does not mean support for graduate and professional students is foregone.

With a new set of graduate students slated to begin academic work at the UA on Aug. 20 with the start of the semester, the Graduate and Professional Student Council, GPSC, held its annual orientation on Aug. 15.

During orientation, GPSC members and also faculty and staff from across campus introduced the incoming group of graduate and professional students to the range of resources and opportunities available both on and off campus.

Among the presenters and their topic areas, along with other resources and programs that the UA provides, included:

Georgia Ehlers, who directs fellowships and community engagement in the UA Graduate College, informed students about external funding resources that exist specificially for graduate students. Also, the UA college maintains other information about financial opportunities, health services, childcare and other services and also has a newsletter, GradFunding.

UA's Campus Health Service offers health services and health insurance and also support around coping with stress and different challenges in life.

Jenny Hoit, a professor in the UA Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, offers a course that covers topics related to ethical research, internal and external funding sources, formal presentations, mentoring and a range of other topics. The course is SPH 649, Survival Skills and Ethics.

The UA Library is offering a one-credit course during the fall semester tailored toward the needs of graduate students. The course is LIBR 696a, Research Strategies for Graduate Students, is an online course that will help student to learn about copyright restrictions, open access within academic, database searching and other things relevant to research. The library also maintains research services for graduate students.

Career Services, among other things, offers information about job openings, internships and fellowships, and also one-on-one curriculum vitae and resume support.
