Arizona Repertory Theatre Season off to a Strong Start

The UA Campus is buzzing about Arizona Repertory Theatre's season – especially its September opener, "How I Learned to Drive."

Written by Paula Vogel, "How I Learned to Drive" is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Drama Desk Award, and the New York Drama Critics Award for best play, among other forms of recognition.

The play is an ironic, lyrical tale of survival as L'il Bit takes driving lessons from her Uncle Peck. While learning the rules of the road, Lil' Bit is drawn into something much darker and more complex. The play reflects upon both what Uncle Peck took from her – her innocence – and what he gave her in return – namely, the freedom and independence of being behind the wheel.

Vogel's incredible script examines troubling questions in a funny, surprising and devastating way. Please note: the play has adult themes and content.

For those in the Tucson region, consider attending the Sept. 20 show.

At 6:45 and before the show, the dramaturgs – individuals who are responsible for helping to translate a story from page to stage in a meaningful and consistent way – will offer behind-the-scenes information about the show.  And after the Sept. 20 show, a special discussion is planned with Rowan Frost of the Southern Arizona Center Against Sexual Assault.
